Newcastle University appoints new pro vice-chancellor

Newcastle University has named Professor Jo Fox as pro vice-chancellor of humanities and social sciences, with her tenure beginning on June 1.

Professor Fox joins from the University of London, where she is currently pro vice-chancellor for research and public engagement and dean of the School of Advanced Study.

A historian and expert in propaganda and disinformation, she has worked extensively with policymakers, museums and archives. 

She is a National Teaching Fellow and a fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society for Manufactures and the Arts.

Professor Fox said: “I am excited about my return to the North East. 

“The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Newcastle is vibrant and innovative. 

“I’m very much looking forward to working with colleagues in Newcastle on the future of these important disciplines.” 

Professor Fox’s appointment reinforces Newcastle University’s commitment to research excellence, education and social mobility in the humanities and social sciences.

Professor Chris Day, vice-chancellor and president of Newcastle University, added: “I am delighted that we have appointed someone with Professor Fox’s level of experience and strong track record of working in the Humanities and across disciplines. 

“The HaSS Faculty represents an impressive range of specialities, and we want to strengthen our contribution in these fields, Jo will play a key role in helping us achieve that. 

“I look forward to welcoming Jo when she arrives and takes up her new role in June.”
