Artist’s flag flies proudly above castle keep
A new flag designed by Newcastle-based artist Mani Kambo is flying above the city’s iconic Castle Keep.
The flag, which connects the artist’s exhibition at Gateshead’s Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to her hometown, features imagery from Mani’s exhibition Ax·is Mun·di.
Mani said: “To see my flag waving above Newcastle, my hometown, is an honour and an incredibly unique experience.
“I love the idea of it bridging two spaces.
“It creates a link, a shared experience, and I hope it sparks conversations and connections for everyone who sees it.”
The Castle Keep, built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II on the site of the original Roman fort and the previous Norman motte and bailey castle, offers stunning panoramic views of Newcastle and Gateshead, including the Baltic Centre.
Mani’s exhibition, inspired by superstition, prayer and her family’s history, is open at the Baltic Centre until June 15.
Admission is free.
