SAFC matchday supports local families in need

A football club has reiterated its goal to support families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. 

Sunderland AFC will use its upcoming match against Millwall to highlight the work of its official charity Foundation of Light.

The game will spotlight the charity's Wear One campaign, which provides assistance to those in need across the North East.

Fans will be encouraged to donate and participate in engagement activities around the stadium, while Sunderland players will wear special Foundation of Light matchday shirts.

With one in three children in Sunderland living in poverty, Lesley Spuhler, Foundation of Light chief executive, said the campaign is more important than ever.

She added: “Football is more than just a game – it’s about community.

“This matchday is an opportunity for the Sunderland family to come together and support those struggling during difficult times. 

“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

Over the past year, Foundation of Light has helped upskill 1304 learners, supported 631 people seeking employment and assisted 88 individuals in gaining employment. 

David Bruce, Sunderland AFC’s chief business officer, added: “The activity undertaken by Foundation of Light plays a hugely important role throughout the City of Sunderland and beyond. 

“We are proud to be championing their continued dedication to our region and look forward to celebrating the incredible impact they have on so many local lives.”
