Raise a glass to raise funds for Newcastle foodbanks
A North East initiative is gaining momentum as more bars sign up to support local foodbanks through a unique fundraising campaign.
‘A Pint For The Foodbanks,’ launched by not-for-profit publication RA!SE, allows pub-goers to donate by purchasing a specially crafted pint.
RA!SE has joined forces with North Shields' Three Kings Brewery to craft a special, citrusy beer called RA!SE Pilsner.
Tyneside-born Danny Broddle, founder of multi-disciplinary culture brand Passarella, which established RA!SE, said: “Our publication reports on global humanitarian issues.
“100 per cent of the profits from each issue goes to the cause we feature.
“It’s nothing short of a national disgrace that we have one happening right in front of our eyes in the UK.
“Three million people felt the need to rely on a foodbank last year.
“Among them are people who keep our society propped up – working teachers, NHS staff and millions of others besides.
“We want as many people as possible to come and support the fundraiser.
“The concept is very simple: buy a pint of RA!SE Pilsner and all profits from your purchase will go towards Newcastle Foodbank, who will then distribute that money among the foodbanks they support in this region.”
Following successful trials in North Shields and Ouseburn last year, The Tanners Arms, in Ouseburn, and The Split Chimp and Gilbert & Smith, in Whitley Bay, will be stocking RA!SE Pilsner this Saturday (March 15), helping to spotlight the current UK food poverty crisis.
Profits from every pint of RA!SE Pilsner sold on the night will go to Newcastle Foodbank.
Ewan McCann, from Three Kings Brewers, added: “We’re honoured to be doing our bit for A Pint For The Foodbanks, so we hope for a great turnout and plenty of people supporting the night across all the participating venues in Whitley Bay and Newcastle.”
Legendary Hacienda DJ Justin Robertson will also be backing the cause with a special set from 7pm until midnight at The Tanners Arms.
Daz Goodwin, from The Tanners Arms, added: “We’re a community-based pub and it’s a sad fact that so many in our community are blighted by the need to use foodbanks.”
Newcastle Foodbank operates seven sites, including locations in the West End of the city, in Benwell and off Westgate Road, Leamington, Heaton, Denton and Byker.
John McCorry, chief executive of Newcastle Foodbank, added: “We’re incredibly grateful to RA!SE and their friends in the North East independent pub and brewing scene for supporting our charity’s work.”
