Airport unveils ‘landmark’ cargo hub

A major cargo development at Newcastle International Airport is set to create thousands of jobs and inject up to £165 million into the North East economy each year.

The 750,000sq ft site, now officially named AirLink, will serve as a key hub for cargo operators, freight forwarders and ground handling agents. 

Officials say the cargo hub will “generate millions for the local economy and unlock new opportunities for businesses” while creating “thousands of high-quality jobs”.

Located south of the runway, it will offer direct apron access for time-sensitive shipments, including pharmaceuticals and auto parts.

The site also benefits from excellent transport links, with close proximity to the A1 ensuring smooth nationwide distribution.

Unveiled at MIPIM, the four-day global real estate conference held in Cannes, France, AirLink was one of several North East development projects showcased to investors, with Newcastle Airport, in partnership with Newcastle City Council and Invest Newcastle, helping shine a spotlight on “the North East’s vast potential”.

"Presenting this project at MIPIM has been an incredible opportunity to showcase the North East’s vast potential on a global stage and reinforce its status as a prime destination for investment.

"We look forward to working with Newcastle City Council to bring AirLink to life, further strengthening the region as a major hub for international trade and economic growth."

Expected to generate 1400 direct jobs and 1200 in supply chains, the hub will support Newcastle Airport’s growing cargo operations, which last year achieved a record high of handling over 6000 tonnes.

A planning application is set for later this year, with a preferred developer already in place.
