Lights back on as Stanley Civic Hall revived
A long-closed community venue in County Durham is set for a new lease of life after securing council backing for redevelopment.
Durham County Council has accepted a bid from Lamplight Arts Centre Ltd to transform Stanley Civic Hall, also known as the Lamplight Arts Centre, into a social enterprise, offering sports, arts and business event spaces.
Stage and screen productions, amateur dramatics and activities for older residents will be part of the venue’s new focus.
Previously leased to Stanley Town Council from 2015 to 2024, the site requires major investment after years of neglect.
To support the reopening, the council has agreed to support Lamplight Arts Centre Ltd with a grant.
Councillor James Rowlandson, cabinet member for resources, investment and assets at Durham County Council, said: “We know residents in Stanley have strong community connections to this building, so it was important we found someone who could take it on and reopen it as a venue that benefits everyone who lives in the town.
“Lamplight Arts Centre Ltd offered the widest community use in its bid for the building, offering the best value and community benefit, and we are pleased to be able to support this newly-established social enterprise in bringing the hall back into use.
“As well as offering a place where local people can come together and enjoy a range of arts and cultural activities, a redeveloped Lamplight Centre will also support the regeneration and economic development of the town centre, helping the entire community thrive.”
