Newcastle’s Blackfriars to host historic beer festival
A new beer festival is set to brew up a blend of tradition and innovation in Newcastle.
The Blackfriars Restaurant and Brewery, located in a 13th century Dominican friary, will host a charity ale festival from May 23-25, celebrating both modern and traditional brewing techniques.
The three-day event will feature beers from local brewers, including Blackfriars’ own St Dominic’s Brewery, as well as Two By Two, Hadrian Border, Wear Beer, Vaux, Almasty, Twice Brewed and Barney’s Beer.
Set in Blackfriars’ newly refurbished Cloister Garden, with street food, live music and its Cloister Garden BBQ, with entertainment from singer-guitarist David Stoker, the event will pay homage to the region’s rich brewing history, reviving medieval ‘Church Ales’ where community gatherings centred around feasting and ale.
Tickets, priced at £9.50, include a commemorative schooner and a first beer, with proceeds benefiting the Newcastle United Foundation.
Rebecca Armstrong, general manager at Blackfriars and organiser of the event, said: “We’re thrilled to launch Blackfriars Beer Festival and bring back a tradition from the medieval period.
“This is set to be a fantastic celebration of beer, brewing and community, welcoming both beer enthusiasts and those looking for a great day out.
“We also get to raise funds for a charity close to our hearts.”
