Teessiders take to streets for hospice care
Hundreds of Teessiders have come together to raise crucial funds for local hospice care.
The Teesside Hospice Midnight Walk, held on Saturday, March 22, saw around 700 walkers don head boppers and walk an 11km route from Redcar to Marske and back to support the charity’s mission to help terminally ill people live as well as possible, for as long as possible.
So far, over £52,000 has been raised, with more sponsorship money expected.
Teesside Hospice, based in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, provides care for over 3000 people each year.
Many of the walkers participated in memory of loved ones who had received support from the hospice.
Kyla de Lehenstein Collins, director of income generation at Teesside Hospice, said: “We’re so grateful for all of the support for our Midnight Walk, from those who participated to our wonderful volunteers and staff team that made it happen.
“Our costs continue to grow, with the current total needed to run our services now at £6.5 million per year.
“That’s almost £18,000 a day required to help people with terminal illnesses in Teesside – and only 25 per cent of that comes from statutory funding, the rest we need to raise ourselves with the help of donors and fundraising events like our Midnight Walk.”
“The money raised by these amazing participants will make a huge difference to our patients and provide a vital injection to our services, which include our In-Patient Unit, Lymphoedema Clinic and wellbeing and counselling services.
“By taking part in events like our Midnight Walk, you’re allowing local people to die with dignity and care, and receive the specialist palliative care they want and need at the end of their lives.”
