£120 million housing scheme breaks ground
A regeneration project is underway in Hartlepool, bringing new homes, jobs and investment to the town’s waterfront.
Teesside property developer Jomast, in partnership with Hartlepool Development Corporation (HDC), has begun work on a £120 million housing scheme that will see multiple brownfield sites developed to deliver up to 650 homes, alongside retail, leisure and medical facilities.
Officials say the development, which is the largest single investment in Hartlepool in a generation, will cater to families, professionals and retirees, offering a mix of houses and apartments to help regenerate the town.
They add that the project will feature improved transport links, including a potential new entrance to Hartlepool Railway Station and nearly 300 EV charging points.
Councillor Brenda Harrison, leader of Hartlepool Borough Council and HDC board member, said: “One of the key priorities of our council is to bring derelict land and buildings across Hartlepool back into use and I am delighted that we have been able to work alongside the Tees Valley mayor, Jomast and the HDC board to progress this exciting development.
“It will transform these derelict brownfield sites and bring much needed good quality and modern homes to Hartlepool.”
Ben Houchen, Tees Valley mayor and HDC chairman, added: “This is an outstanding example of how HDC can move quickly in delivering vital regeneration to areas of Hartlepool which have stood neglected for far too long.
“Spades are in the ground, bricks will soon be laid and the people of Hartlepool can see for themselves how these unloved and derelict brownfield sites are being turned into great places for local people to live.
Mayor Houchen added that the development would “create hundreds of construction jobs,” helping support local construction firms and “driving forward Hartlepool’s economy”.
The scheme aligns with wider regeneration efforts in the town, complementing the new £34.5 million Highlight wellbeing hub and the restoration of the Museum of Hartlepool and Wingfield Castle.
Further works under the Council’s Hartlepool Town Deal programme include improving connectivity between the Waterfront and town centre following the completion of a new route from the Marina to Seaton Carew.
