Magna turns up the heat with fire zone revamp

A South Yorkshire science attraction has unveiled a refreshed interactive experience, completing a two-year transformation.

Magna Science Adventure Centre has reopened its Fire Pavilion following a £280,000 refurbishment by Sheffield-based interactive tech firm Aivaf.

The upgrade marks the final stage of a £1.9 million overhaul of Magna’s core exhibits, which explore earth, air, fire and water.

New features include the ‘Fire Snake,’ which sends flames spiralling through a clear tube, as well as a helicopter simulator that lets visitors tackle virtual wildfires.

The iconic fire tornado remains a centrepiece, alongside the return of the electro-magnetic cranes.

Bruce Davies, managing director at Aivaf, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Fire Pavilion at Magna back to life again.

“Our team has pushed the boundaries of interactive design and artistry to ignite an experience that is as visually spectacular as it is educational.

“Visitors of all ages will leave with a new-found appreciation for the science and power of fire.”

The refurbishment, part-funded by Rotherham’s £20 million Levelling Up investment secured by Rotherham Council, has also enhanced visitor facilities, including upgrades to the reception, café and lifts, as well as new safety flooring for the Aqua-Tek splash park, which will reopen for May half-term.

Stuart Ballard, Magna education director, added: “It’s fantastic to see young people returning to our Fire Pavilion and exploring the wonders, beauty and power of this most dramatic of elements.

“The refurbishment of Fire completes an extensive period of investment and improvement right across Magna.

“Our aim throughout has been to future-proof the visitor attraction, with a clear focus on delivering engaging and exciting STEM learning, accessibility and sustainability.

“We now look forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of Magna’s opening in 2026 and to firing the imagination of many more generations of young people to come.”
