Work officially starts on 2000-home development
Work has started on a 2000-home development.
Hellens Group has broken ground on Burtree Garden Village.
Officials say the project, based on the outskirts of Darlington, will deliver housing, retail outlets and up to 200,000sq metres of employment space over the next 20 years.
Wynyard and Washington-based Hellens Group is working with Homes England – which has committed £43 million to support highway improvements and sustainable transport services – and Darlington Borough Council on the scheme.
Gavin Cordwell-Smith, Hellens Group chief executive, said: “Breaking ground at Burtree Garden Village is a proud and exciting milestone.
“This project has been years in the making and will deliver a vibrant, sustainable community with much-needed homes, employment space and green infrastructure.”
Lola McEvoy, Darlington MP, said: “It’s really important we get building houses, so people can have nice places to live with the correct infrastructure and mix of tenures.”
Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council deputy leader, added: “It’s good to see a partnership that has been developing for a number of years start to deliver in a tangible way.”
Hellens Group also operates from a base in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.
