Birtley community pool is making waves
A community swimming pool is celebrating a successful first Easter holiday season following a volunteer-led reopening and a wave of local support.
Birtley Community Pool, in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, reopened in September 2024 after more than a year of closure, thanks to a charity-led rescue backed by fundraising campaigns and support from the Community Ownership Fund, the National Lottery and The Royal Foundation.
The pool, which welcomed Prince William and Olympic swimmers at its official reopening on October 3, now offers daily public sessions, lessons, aquafit and even floating sound baths.
Heated pools, soft play, free Wi-Fi and a revamped spectator area add to the appeal.
Matthew Grant, treasurer of Birtley Community Pool Trustees, said: “Our regular customers are enjoying these activities and giving us great feedback.
“It’s been a good six months and the faith all our team have put into the pool has paid off, with the local community being the overall winner.
“If you haven’t yet visited us, please come along, try one of our activities, and support this invaluable community asset.”
Open seven days a week with affordable pricing and flexible membership, the pool has quickly reestablished itself as a popular hub for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Yvonne Probert, chair of Birtley Community Pool Trustees, added: “The benefits of swimming are significant and wide-ranging, and we want to encourage more of the community to experience those benefits by participating in activities at our pool.”
