Wave of funding powers underwater tech

A wireless technology company is set to scale up globally as demand grows for real-time data solutions in hard-to-reach underwater and underground environments.

CSignum, headquartered in Bathgate, near Edinburgh, has secured £6 million in Series A funding to accelerate the development and deployment of its “truly unique” patented EM-2 wireless systems.

The systems use electromagnetic field signalling to transmit sensor data through water, ice, soil and even concrete – something traditional wireless methods cannot do.

Led by Archangels, Par Equity and Scottish Enterprise, with additional investment from British Business Investment (BBI), Raptor Group, Deep Future, SeaAhead’s Blue Angel Network and US-based backers, bosses say the funding will support the expansion of CSignum’s operations across the UK, US and EU.

They add it will help boost its engineering team and strengthen its product and data services portfolio.

Jonathan Reeves, chief executive at CSignum, said: “This investment reflects the growing recognition of the critical need for innovative communication solutions in the underwater IoT sector.

“The support from our investors will allow us to scale our operations, enhance our product offerings and help industries worldwide manage their resources more effectively.

“We are grateful for their trust and excited to shape the future of underwater communication.”

Dan McKiddie, investment manager at Archangels, added: “CSignum has developed a truly unique technological breakthrough which could be a game-changer for those industries reliant on securing reliable data from their underwater operations.

“We’re looking forward to supporting the management team in their efforts to scale the business and disrupt the global market for underwater communication.”

Founded in 2020, CSignum already serves environmental monitoring, maritime and infrastructure clients, and is responding to upcoming regulatory pressures, including real-time reporting requirements.
