Partnership gains approval for 'milestone' city offices
A real estate partnership has secured approval for a capital redevelopment project.
Edge and Mitsubishi Estate London have gained planning permission to transform 125 Shaftesbury Avenue into a 250,000sq ft office building.
Bosses say the 1980s structure’s renovation will provide vital space in a “chronically under-supplied” marketplace and “meet the changing needs of London’s businesses”.
They add the scheme – known as EDGE Shaftesbury, and designed by London-based architectural and urban design practice DSDHA – will include green roofs, biodiversity-enhancing planting and a new pedestrian route between New Compton Street and Old Compton Street.
Based close to Tottenham Court Road station, 125 Shaftesbury Avenue has previously been home to companies including BT, Yahoo, Meta and WeWork.
Fons van Dorst, Edge managing director UK, said: “This project is an important milestone in our London portfolio, and will create a high-quality, sustainable office building in a central West End location.”
Shinichi Kagitomi, Mitsubishi Estate London chief executive, said: “It is well established that the West End office market is currently chronically under-supplied.
“This approval will be welcomed by the occupier community, and we are looking forward to delivering much-needed new office space.”
Deborah Saunt, DSDHA founding director, added: “Our extensive retrofit of 125 Shaftesbury Avenue will be an exemplary model of both sustainable refurbishment and socially and historically responsive architecture.”
