Gentoo secures approval for 294-home scheme
A housing provider is set to deliver hundreds of low-carbon homes.
Gentoo Group has received approval from Sunderland City Council to build 294 homes in Pennywell, forming the next phase of the Chester Gate project.
Part of Gentoo’s Affordable Homes Programme, the scheme will contribute to the delivery of more than 700 new homes across the city by 2029.
Bosses say the development will bring a mix of houses, bungalows and apartments to brownfield land, with all homes available for rent or shared ownership.
They add the plans also include landscaped open space and new pedestrian links, with the scheme expected to support 198 construction jobs and generate almost £67 million in economic output.
Joanne Gordon, homes and development director at Gentoo Group, said: “We are delighted our application has been approved.
“This development marks a significant milestone in Gentoo’s Affordable Development Programme, creating an affordable home for more than 1500 residents in the city.
“I am confident this development will transform the local area, both socially and economically.
“We will work closely with our partners to support the local area throughout the development to ensure we are creating a space with both new and existing residents in mind.”
The homes will feature solar panels, electric vehicle charging points and air source heat pumps.
Construction is expected to begin this summer.
