Getting to know... Chris Wood

We know you as the founder of Tanglewood Games, and a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick…

As well as my slight obsession with work, I like to meditate. Meditation and mindfulness can be in many forms. As well as the excellent Waking Up app, the perfect platform for meditation if you are a very rational and practical person, I like to sit and make Lego kits. Lego is a great way to switch off your brain.

Did you always want to work in your industry?

Yes but I didn't realise it was an option until my early twenties. I'd fallen into programming after my physics degree. I found work boring because I didn't care about the product. I taught myself games programming and made the leap.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?

The best thing... There is nothing as exciting and motivating as seeing something grow from nothing. When you feel like that, every day is enjoyable.

Worst... It's very hard to know if you are doing a good job, making the right choices, and there's no one to turn to for answers.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Starting Tanglewood Games and working long hours for the first four years when I was the only director. Getting us through the embryonic stage, with no money, no reputation and no customers.

How do you relax outside of work?

Travel, walking, yoga, mindfulness, Lego, really long baths.

What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?

The character of people in the North East is all about our industrial past and the challenges we've faced along the way. We're tough, no nonsense, friendly, fair, hard-working and we strive to improve.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know…

I'd already worked from home for over 10 years when the Covid lockdowns started in 2020. I was so sick of it that I opened Tanglewood Games first office during the pandemic and started working out of it. So I stopped working from home just as the world discovered it.
