Plans backed for Blyth energy sector training hub
An education hub aimed at nurturing tomorrow’s renewables sector workers has moved a step closer.
Planners have backed a blueprint to create the Energy Central Institute, in Blyth.
The base will train students on areas including renewable energy and engineering, electrification, battery technology and digitisation.
The venture will be operated by Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult alongside education and business partners, and comes after the Energy Central Learning Hub opened at the trade gateway last year.
GSSArchitecture is leading design work on the building, which will stand on the site of the former Keel Row Shopping Centre.
Work is expected to begin later this year, with construction slated for completion in 2027.
Simon Rennison-Rae, GSSArchitecture partner, said: “It is amazing news that the institute has been approved.
“We have been involved in this project from its inception, and it builds upon our understanding of the clean energy, research, innovation and education sectors, as well as the crossover between industry and academia and the benefits this can bring.”
WSP will serve as project manager, quantity surveyor, principal designer CDM and provide civil and structural and mechanical and electrical engineering services.
Ben McManus, WSP quantity surveyor, added: “The institute will be a catalyst for skills development and innovation in the North East.
“Our team is proud to be contributing to a facility that not only supports the town’s net-zero ambitions but also creates a flexible, future-ready space for learning, collaboration and clean growth.”
