Civil engineer 'steps forward' with office move

A civil engineering firm says it is primed to “take a big step forward” after switching to new headquarters.

Southbay Civil Engineering has moved into Team Valley’s Moongate House.

Bosses say the 6000sq ft site will provide space to add to the business’ 60-strong workforce and support its growing order book.

Formerly based in North Shields for nearly 20 years, the firm works across the marine construction sector, with headline projects including repairs to Roker Pier, in Sunderland, and North Shields Ferry Landing.

The company is also delivering upgrades to South Shields Pier, North Shields Pier and the Redcar Bulk Terminal distribution hub.

Paul Stephenson, managing director, said: “Moongate House offers the ideal location to provide an attractive and collaborative working environment for our highly skilled team, and to ensure we are well-placed to attract more high-calibre individuals.

“The ongoing growth in the renewable energy sector has led to a great deal of new investment in harbours and ports across the UK to accommodate new offshore wind facilities.

“As wind turbine construction increases in size and quantity, port infrastructure also must be developed, so our skills and expertise are in high demand.”

The business, which has signed a ten-year lease on Moongate House, is also working on projects in Pembrokeshire and Frindsbury, in Kent, with its North East client list including Shepherd Offshore, Brett Aggregates and petrochemical firm ConocoPhillips.

Antony Ballantyne, operations director, added: “We have grown organically over the past 20 years, to establish a reputation as one of the UK’s leading maritime civil engineering contractors.

“Our investment in new premises, recruitment, training and technology means we are well placed to take a big step forward in our new home.”
