Switchgear firm 'powers on' with office launches
A power engineering firm has expanded with the launch of two bases.
R&B Switchgear Group has opened sites in Southampton and Sunderland.
It says the moves will “supercharge the company’s national response to growing demand”.
Known for making and maintaining switchgear apparatus, which helps control and protect electrical equipment in power systems, the firm says its expansion will boost its presence across the marine, energy, utilities and rail sectors.
Bosses add its Sunderland hub – which complements existing bases in Heywood, Greater Manchester, Glasgow and Aberdeen – will focus on maintenance, servicing and retrofitting of low and high‑voltage switchgear across the North East.
It is led by industry expert Steve Smith, whose CV includes time at ABB and Dorman Smith Switchgear.
He said: “We look forward to making a significant impact through our partnerships with some of the region’s most notable businesses, infrastructure projects and healthcare providers.”
The firm’s Southampton hub will operate as a marine service centre to support cruise line and commercial fleets.
Headed by operations director Oliver Batt, officials say it has already delivered transformer rebuilds, emergency repairs and maintenance services to companies including P&O Cruises and MSC.
Oliver said: “Our Southampton site is a major milestone.
“It improves our responsiveness and reinforces our commitment to delivering specialist marine services at pace and scale.”
Max Beswick, managing director, added: “With this dual expansion, we’re poised to deliver a more agile and more efficient service to clients.”
