Tech firm Filtronic wins Airbus satellite contract
A technology firm has secured a contract to help expand global broadband connectivity.
Filtronic is set to supply filter and diplexer assemblies to Airbus Defence and Space.
The apparatus will support production of satellites for Eutelsat OneWeb, which operates a low Earth orbit satellite constellation focused on enhancing broadband links worldwide.
The company will make the equipment – which will be fitted into satellite payloads – at its NETPark-based headquarters in Sedgefield, County Durham.
The deal follows the extension of a headline partnership with rocket and spacecraft operator SpaceX, with bosses saying the work further “highlights its considerable space sector credentials”.
It also comes just days after Filtronic unveiled a bullish trading outlook, with officials revealing fresh contracts and factory investments leave it primed to “exceed market expectations”.
Nat Edington, Filtronic chief executive, said: “This project aligns with our strategy to expand capabilities in the space sector.
“We are already a technology leader in ground-based satellite communications systems, and this contract reflects our expanding reach into satellite payload systems.”
