Council appoints new managing director
Brian Archer has been officially appointed as the new managing director at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.
His appointment was ratified by councillors at the Borough Council Committee on Thursday, May 15.
Brian brings wide experience from senior roles, including serving as the corporate director for economy at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and as managing director of Business Durham.
Brian, currently the executive director for growth, enterprise and environment, will succeed John Sampson, who is retiring, and will take up the leadership role this autumn.
Councillors from all parties supported the appointment, following Brian’s selection as the preferred candidate last week.
He said: “I feel honoured to accept this role serving the people of Redcar and Cleveland.
“It is a wonderful area with resilient, hard-working people and I am excited and proud to do my part helping make the big ambitions we all have this wonderful place a reality.
“In my three years as a director, I have been constantly impressed with my colleagues right across our council.
“The commitment to our residents (including some of the most vulnerable people in our society), businesses and visitors is – truly – remarkable.
“I am looking forward to taking on my new, key role supporting you all and working with partners to continue developing our vision for a bright future.”
Councillor Alec Brown, leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, added: “Brian has a strong vision for our area, understands and loves our communities and has immense experience in business and local government.
"We were very fortunate to have such a strong candidate and it was no surprise at all that his appointment was approved by all parties.”
