Newcastle brain team earns top accolade
A hospital trust has been recognised once again for its specialist care, following the renewal of a national accreditation for brain tumour treatment.
Newcastle Hospitals has retained its status as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence, celebrating the research-led, high-quality care delivered at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Awarded by The Brain Tumour Charity, the reaccreditation followed a rigorous peer-reviewed assessment and patient feedback.
The centre, which operates on 30 new patients a month with brain tumours, brings together experts in surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, rehabilitation and psychology, supported by advances in genomics and access to clinical trials.
Its approach combines cutting-edge treatments with personalised care and support services.
The reaccreditation also highlighted the team’s strong community links and staff development, reinforcing Newcastle’s national standing as a hub for advanced neuro-oncology care.
Mr Akbar Hussain, neuro-oncology surgeon at Newcastle Hospitals, said: “We are delighted to be among a small number of centres across the country awarded this reaccreditation, in recognition of our holistic brain tumour treatment and care.
“This is a really special achievement and a testament to the outstanding commitment of our staff, working in varied roles from the first assessment, through the whole treatment journey, care, recovery and rehabilitation of patients.
“Our clinical research and close working with scientific colleagues is essential in bringing more tailored and effective therapies for patients.”
