Pendower Hall set for revival

A historic property in Newcastle’s West End is set to be transformed following the approval of plans to create new high-end homes on the site.

Fenham Properties Ltd has secured planning permission to convert the Grade II-listed Pendower Hall into four luxury multi-bedroomed properties, with a fifth new-build home also planned within the two-hectare grounds.

Built in 1867 for Quaker banker J W Pearce in 1867, Pendower Hall had been used by the council as a school prior to being turned into an education training centre, but has since stood empty for more than a decade.

The ‘exciting’ revival plans focus on a heritage-led design that combines period features with modern architecture, incorporating new entrances, kitchens and bathrooms.

Alongside this, a wellness centre with a gym, swimming pool, sauna and steam room will be added, complemented by enhanced landscaping and improved access.

Alex Franklin, associate director at Hedley Planning, who oversaw the planning application, said: “This decision is great news and we now look forward to moving to the next phase of an exciting redevelopment project.

“This is an important city site, so bringing new life and purpose to the building will deliver benefits to the local community and heralds major changes to this part of the city.

“As planners, we always want to see urban regeneration of brownfield sites and the re-purposing of existing buildings to deliver a strong legacy.”

Construction is scheduled to start before the end of the year.
