Sheffield duo 'bridge gap' with research agency
A Yorkshire-based academic and a former media producer are teaming up to create a new communications agency.
Creative Smarts, founded by Dr Rivka Smith from the University of Sheffield and former BBC producer Edwin Buckley, aims to translate complex academic research into engaging and accessible content.
The agency operates out of Sheffield and Manchester, combining Rivka’s deep academic expertise with Edwin’s extensive media and communications background.
Edwin, whose career spans producing a range of programmes for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, as well as senior communications roles in charities and public organisations, said: “Research can often get lost in complexity, but with Creative Smarts we want to change that by transforming intricate findings into compelling content that engages and drives action.
“We want to make research resonate with people beyond the academic sphere.”
Edwin and Rivka’s partnership began in childhood, when they were both cast, aged 11, in a local pantomime of Babes in the Wood.
Now reunited professionally, they are combining data-driven research with creative storytelling.
Rivka brings nearly 15 years of multidisciplinary academic experience, working with public sector partners such as police forces and the NHS.
She added: “I’ve seen how challenging it can be to make research accessible.
“Creative Smarts is a sector-merging venture that lets us bridge the gap between rigorous research and creative communication, turning complex findings into engaging content like infographics, videos, podcasts, webinars and campaigns that truly connect with diverse audiences.”
Having recently completed a project for Lloyds Bank Foundation, Creative Smarts plans to expand its work with universities, non-profits and professional services.
