Dudleys adds spark to gas works housing scheme
An engineer has supported work to transform an ex-utilities site into housing.
Dudleys Consulting Engineers delivered groundworks at ‘The Gas Works’, at Heworth Green, in York.
The 12-acre site – which included 22-metre gasometers, pipework, an electricity substation, telecoms mast and warehouses and offices – has planning approval for up to 600 homes.
The firm worked with Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental to prepare a local authority blueprint for the removal of a gasometer and diversion of an overground gas main.
It also partnered with The Sirius Group to carry out excavation work, treat contaminated soil, crush materials and provide civil engineering support.
Andy Walker, of Dudleys Consulting Engineers, which was appointed principal engineering partner to the development in 2018, said: “We faced many challenges, due to significant contamination from 100 years of coke and sea gas uses, and many buried structures.
“But our team successfully navigated these challenges, and we are delighted to hand over this important, disused brownfield site ready for much-needed residential accommodation.”
The project adds to further work in Dudleys Consulting Engineers’ order book, which already includes Greenside Mills, near Huddersfield; Blossom Fields, in Temple Newsam; and AAA Park, in Mirfield.
The firm’s consultancy team is also retained to advise on the redevelopment of Sunnybank Mills, in Leeds, and is supporting Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society.
