Funding helps engineer tap into mine project
An engineer has been backed to expand a project tackling the country’s coal legacy.
Northern Engineering Solutions has received funding to advance research into microalgae mine water treatment.
Bosses say the work will help clean up water seeping into former colliery workings, which – if untreated – can pollute rivers, streams and groundwater.
Led by Pedro Fernandez, the company will use cash backing from national synthetic biology organisation SynbiCITE to develop microalgal photobioreactor applications capable of removing heavy metals from mine water for future use.
Simon Taylor, director at the North Shields-based mechanical, electrical and process engineering firm, said: “We are committed to exploring innovative approaches that solve real-world challenges and positively impact people and the planet.
“This funding will help us take huge strides in research and development, with the aim of getting a working solution in the field for testing in the near future.”
