Merit in good health with Bedford Hospital progress
An off-site building maker has hit a £3.6 million healthcare project milestone.
Merit has installed seven modular units at Bedford Hospital.
The buildings will form part of a new same-day emergency care unit, which health bosses say will ease operational backlogs by treating thousands of patients every year.
The venture will include consultation space, assessment areas and clinical management and examination rooms.
Work is set to be completed later this year.
Tony Wells, chief executive at Northumberland-based Merit, which made the units at its Cramlington factory, said: “This important milestone reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare environments quickly and effectively.”
Melanie Banks, director of redevelopment and strategic planning at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “Merit’s off-site manufacturing is beyond what we have seen with other modular makers.
“It has dramatically reduced the extent and duration of the impact to our operational site.”
The project adds to a Merit healthcare portfolio that includes support for the Seaton Delaval-based NHS Medicines Manufacturing Centre, a hybrid theatre and MRI site at York Hospital and a community diagnostic hub at Woking Community Hospital.
