Fridge recycler expands with £15 million plant
An electric waste disposal and recycling firm has completed a £15 million Scottish expansion.
GAP Group North East has opened a 50-plus job fridge processing base near Perth.
Bosses say the “hugely significant milestone” will complement a flagship Gateshead processing site and boost annual company-wide recycling capacity of the white goods staple to more than 1.3 million.
They add it will operate with a “100 per cent net-zero carbon footprint” under the GAP Alba brand from the Binn Ecopark, near Glenfarg.
The site was opened by Scottish First Minister John Swinney.
Peter Moody, GAP Group North East chief executive, said: “We aim to provide the most environmentally sound and technologically advanced solution to fridge reprocessing in Scotland and the UK.
“I’m honoured our plans dovetail perfectly with Scotland’s desire to be on the front foot with net-zero commitments and wider green obligations.”
First Minister Swinney said: “Scotland’s transition to net-zero is not only a moral obligation, but can provide economic opportunities to communities across the country.
“The opening of GAP Alba’s new facility is an excellent example of this, bringing over 50 good, green jobs to the local area.”
Kate Osborne, MP for Jarrow and Gateshead East, added: “I'm proud GAP Group North East is part of our region’s green revolution.
“The North East is leading the way in the green economy, thanks to businesses like GAP, which are investing in new technology and opening new plants.”
