Chemical reaction brewing with Teesside event

A science and innovation hub is set to host a landmark chemical sector event.

The Wilton Centre, near Redcar, will host ‘Reimagining Carbon & Defossilising the UK Chemicals Industry’ on June 12. 

The event, organised by Pioneer Group and Innovate UK Business Connect, and hosted by Dr Jen Vanderhoven, chief operating officer of the Biobased and Biodegradable Industries Association, is expected to mark a “pivotal step” in reshaping the sector through collaboration, knowledge-sharing and new technologies.

Dr Vanderhoven said: “This event is a pivotal moment for anyone committed to transforming the UK chemicals industry. 

“By bringing together innovators, policymakers and investors, we’re not just discussing sustainability, we’re actively building the networks and strategies needed to shift from fossil to sustainable carbon sources. 

“It’s a unique opportunity to help shape a greener, more resilient industrial future.”

Attendees will include senior figures from the Government, academia and business, with keynote talks, expert panels and workshops on the agenda. 

The day will also see the launch of a new Sustainable Chemicals Innovation Network.

Graeme Cruickshank, chief technology and innovation officer at the Centre for Process Innovation, who will be speaking at the event, added: “The decisions made and direction taken this year will set the shape of the UK chemical industry for the next 20 years.” 

The event, which is free to attend, is part of the new Pioneer Presents series, taking place throughout 2025 at the Wilton Centre, which is celebrating its 50th year and preparing for a major expansion through its newly approved Freeport Development.
