The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service's new 3D flood water training facility

Meldrum makes waves with new training facility

A North East engineering firm has helped deliver Europe’s first 3D flood water training facility in Northern Ireland, designed to transform emergency response training.

Gateshead-headquartered Meldrum Civil Engineering has partnered with Engineering Paddler Designs (EPD) to develop the £5 million project for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), which bosses say will set “a new benchmark for training innovation in Europe”.

Built using a mix of pre-cast concrete, mock buildings and RapidBloc technology, the “pioneering” centre features a 100-metre channel, submerged vehicles and a weir simulator.

The facility enables highly realistic flood rescue practice and is the first to use the Rapid Water Course 3D Obstacle System.

Meldrum instructed sister companies Meldrum Building Services and Meldrum Fabrication to assist on the project, which was developed alongside contractor Felix O’Hare.

Michael Robertson, construction manager at Meldrum Civil Engineering, said: “Our collaboration with EPD through Rapid Water Courses ensures that every component meets top safety and functionality standards.

“This bespoke facility elevates emergency services preparedness and sets a new benchmark for training innovation in Europe.”

Andy Laird, EPD founder, added: “The adaptable RapidBloc system allows trainers to simulate various flood and rescue scenarios, helping firefighters refine their skills in a controlled yet challenging environment.”
