Fresh minds tackle North East’s future
A group of graduates from the North East have come together to tackle real-world challenges in a bold bid to shape the region’s greener, more inclusive future.
Hosted at the National 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub at the Port of Tyne, GradSprint 2025 brought together more than 50 early-career professionals from more than 25 top organisations.
The event was held in partnership with the North East Combined Authority.
Working in teams, participants developed innovative solutions across five focus areas including green homes, skills, transport and stronger neighbourhoods.
Their ideas were pitched to regional leaders, with some set to influence future policy.
Alan Boddy, Livin Housing chief executive, said: “The graduates have been inspirational.
“They are very hungry for information, full of ideas and ask lots of questions.
“It works both ways – they inspire new ideas in me too.”
Henry Kippin, North East Combined Authority chief executive, added: “This event shows the power of collaboration and the importance of giving our graduates a seat at the table when it comes to shaping strategy and policy.
“GradSprint brought fresh thinking and bold ideas that align directly with our regional priorities.
“These are the voices and ideas that will shape the future of the North East.”
GradSprint forms part of the Innovation Hub’s wider drive to build a future-ready workforce.
Dr Jo North, innovation ecosystem director at the Port of Tyne, added: “GradSprint is designed to give the next generation of regional talent a real opportunity to shape the future of the North East.
“Events like this show what happens when you connect bright minds with real challenges.”
