UA92 unveils business of football degree
A Greater Manchester higher education institution is launching a degree designed to give students an all-access pass to the business of football.
University Academy 92 (UA92), co-founded by former Manchester United and England footballer Gary Neville, has unveiled its new Business of Football degree in collaboration with top-level clubs and industry experts.
Devised by Gary, course leader Spencer Fearn – once the youngest owner of a professional football club in Britain – and UA92 associate dean Dr Firoz Bhaiyat, the course offers students a behind-the-scenes look at football operations, spanning governance, player care, marketing, artificial intelligence and fan engagement.

Created with input from Manchester United, Altrincham FC, the Manchester FA and the English Football League, the degree aims to equip students with the tools to navigate and innovate across the global football landscape.
A standout feature is a partnership with Salford City FC, offering students access to internships, mentorship and real-world projects.
Gary, who has followed a hugely successful playing career with equally successful ventures in punditry and business, said: “This degree fills a critical gap in football education in this country.
“Students won’t just study football business, they’ll experience it.
“Through our partnerships and the involvement of the Class of 92, students gain direct access to current chief executives and chairs of football clubs, creating genuine pathways into employment.
“We’re not just teaching students about the traditional football business, we’re showing them how clubs can unlock new revenue streams, from estate planning to social media strategies.
“The football industry is evolving rapidly and our graduates will be equipped to lead that change.”
Case studies include Real Madrid’s stadium revamp and the transformation of Wrexham FC under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The curriculum covers both men’s and women’s leagues, with a focus on helping clubs discover new revenue streams – especially through emerging technologies.
Awarded by Lancaster University, the course features lectures from Gary, fellow Class of 92 members and current football executives.
Applications are open now for September 2025, with multiple start dates available year-round.
Sara Prowse, chief executive of UA92, added: “We work closely with businesses to ensure we are preparing our students for successful careers.
“This programme is no different; it is tailor-made for a sport that is a multi-billion-pound industry.
“We are shaping the leaders of tomorrow.”
