Fresh start for Morpeth town markets

A Northumberland market town is set to revitalise its local economy and shopping experience through a new public-private partnership.

The team behind Sanderson Arcade has joined forces with Morpeth Town Council and Northumberland County Council to transform the town’s markets and attract more local and independent traders.

Weekly Wednesday markets and monthly themed events will continue in the town’s Market Place, with upgrades planned to improve infrastructure, marketing and stallholder support.

A recruitment drive is now underway to bring in more local, independent and artisan traders to create a vibrant mix of high-quality stalls and enhance the market’s appeal.

Market criteria are also being refreshed to prioritise fresh, local produce and unique products that reflect the area’s heritage.

The initiative aims to support small businesses, draw more footfall and secure the long-term future of Morpeth’s markets.

Lottie Thompson, centre manager at Sanderson Arcade, said: “We are really pleased to be part of this important collaboration to deliver sustainable improvements to our markets here in Morpeth, collaborating closely with other stakeholders in the town.

“The success of our markets benefits the whole town – a thriving and bustling market is such an important part of the vitality of our town centre.”

Councillor Rachael Hogg, mayor of Morpeth, added: “The Town Council are pleased to be part of the relaunch of the weekly market, a much-loved tradition that brings vibrancy and local enterprise to the heart of our town.

“The market aims to support local traders and offers residents and visitors a unique shopping experience.

“We are making several improvements to enhance the appearance, variety and sustainability of the market.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the refreshed Wednesday market and seeing it thrive once again.”
