New chair at Northern Powerhouse Partnership
A think tank and advocacy group has made a senior appointment.
The Northern Powerhouse Partnership has unveiled Baroness Julie Elliott as its new chair.
The former Sunderland Central MP replaces Lord Jim O’Neill following the end of his term.
Promising “to ensure the North has the opportunity to thrive”, Baroness Elliott says the Northern Powerhouse Partnership – which campaigns for moves to drive economic growth across the North of England – will continue working with cross-sector partners to action change.
She said: “The North is full of talent and potential, yet persistent challenges remain.
“I look forward to working with businesses, universities, mayors, local leaders and national politicians,” added Baroness Elliott, whose time in Westminster included a spell as shadow minister for energy and climate change.
Lord O’Neill added: “We founded the Northern Powerhouse Partnership to give business a voice in improving Northern productivity, and to bring civic and business leaders together to develop solutions to the UK’s deep regional divides.
“It has been a privilege to help inform critical research to the long-term health of the UK economy.
“I know Julie will be a passionate champion for the North of England and will steer the Northern Powerhouse Partnership from strength to strength.”
