Builder revamps nobility house into 48-bed hotel

A builder has transformed ex-nobility property into a 70-job hotel.

Robertson Construction North East has revamped Alnwick’s Bailiffgate House into a 48-bedroom venue.

Bosses say the work “begins a new chapter” for the Grade II-listed building, which dates back to the Georgian era.

Bought in 1780 by the first Duke of Northumberland as a commissioner’s house, the property – which neighbours Alnwick Castle and has been renamed Bailiffgate Hotel – was also a school.

Robertson Construction North East worked with development and investment company Northumberland Estates on the project, which supported more than 250 trade jobs and delivered stabilisation improvements, roof repairs and stonework, staircase and timber sash window preservation.

The firm also built a glazed linkway between the building’s existing and new structures.

Elliot Robertson, Robertson Group chief executive, said: “Bailiffgate is a strong example of blending heritage sensitivity with modern construction, to create a valuable addition for the Alnwick community.

“The project has supported local employment, created apprenticeship opportunities and strengthened the visitor economy.”

David Straughan, Northumberland Estates’ development director, added: “Preserving the building’s heritage has been central to this ambitious transformation.

“From painstakingly restoring original architectural features to integrating modern infrastructure discreetly within the historic fabric, every stage was approached with sensitivity and precision.

“We’ve worked hand-in-hand with Robertson, who have brought our vision to life.”
