Ryedale Group serves up new padel courts

A North Yorkshire business is branching out with a new sports venture.

Ryedale Group, based in Kirkbymoorside, has launched We Play Padel Ltd., introducing two new padel courts on its site as part of a bold diversification strategy.

Known for its sustainable printing work through Hortipak and Ryedale Printing, the third-generation family firm has expanded in recent years, including the addition of a self-storage business, called We Store, in 2020.

Supported by a £440,000 building transition loan from Lloyds, bosses say the new canopy-covered courts, which boast solar-powered lighting, automated access and affordable pay-to-play options, are in response to the region’s growing interest in padel and the shortage of local facilities.

They add that the courts will occupy 20 per cent of the previously underutilised site, as well as create opportunities for local coaches who would otherwise need to travel 20 miles to the nearest courts.

James Buffoni, managing director at Ryedale Group Limited, said: “Since taking over the Ryedale Group seven years ago, diversification and growth have been a key focus.

“While specialist horticultural printing remains our core business, its seasonal nature makes it vital to explore new opportunities.

“That need became even clearer during the pandemic, when we realised we had to think beyond pivoting within print and instead look at entirely new ventures, first with We Store, and now with We Play Padel.

“Kirkbymoorside is nestled between Helmsley and Pickering – two well-known Yorkshire tourist spots – so we saw an opportunity to offer something that benefits local residents, while also drawing visitors from surrounding towns who might not otherwise have access to padel facilities outside of major cities.”

The move follows a series of sustainability upgrades across the group, including the installation of over 500 solar panels and electric vehicle infrastructure, helping Ryedale Group improve its EPC rating from a C to a B for its office, and from a D to a B at its factory.

Chris Middleton, relationship manager at Lloyds, added: “What’s impressive about a business like Ryedale is its ability to spot a gap in the local market and become a leading force.

“We saw this with the fast-paced success of We Store – which has already attracted more than 300 active subscriptions from the local community since it opened in 2020 – and I have no doubt we’ll see it again with the new padel courts.

“Being able to support the business with the funding it needs to realise the ambitions of We Play Padel, investing in the local economy as well as its continued expansion and diversification, is a privilege.

“I look forward to seeing what James and the team have in store next.”

We Play Padel will open this Saturday (June 21), with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton and Shadow Secretary of State.

Mr Hollinrake added: “I’m delighted to open these new padel courts in Kirkbymoorside – a fantastic addition to our community that promotes sport, connection and local pride.

“It’s a testament to Ryedale Group’s commitment to enhancing our area and I look forward to seeing residents enjoy this unique facility.”
