Parker Oak carves out new future

A Yorkshire timber business is entering a new era following a management buyout.

Parker Oak (Yorkshire) Ltd, a specialist in bespoke oak-framed buildings, has been bought by long-serving project manager Spike Ambery Smith and his wife Jess, supported by a £208,500 loan from Finance For Enterprise (FFE).

The Dalton-based company, which operates from a workshop and showroom near Thirsk, has built a strong reputation across the North for its craftsmanship and use of traditional techniques.

Founded over 30 years ago, the business had been run by the Parker family until outgoing managing director Darren Parker stepped back.

With new leadership in place, Spike and Jess say Parker Oak plans to stay true to its roots while exploring fresh opportunities for growth.

Spike, who joined Parker Oak in 2002 when he was just 16, said: “I’ve been part of Parker Oak for most of my life, and I’m incredibly proud to be taking the reins. 

“Darren, his wife Jo and the team have built something truly special, and with this support from FFE, I’m excited to continue the company’s legacy, maintaining the high standards and traditional techniques that set us apart.”

Ben Merrick, senior business lending manager at FFE, added: “Parker Oak has built a strong reputation for craftsmanship and quality, and we were impressed by Spike’s dedication to the company and his deep understanding of the business. 

“It’s fantastic to see a long-serving employee step up to take over and lead the business into the future.

“We’re delighted to have provided the funding to help make this transition possible.”
