‘Pivotal moment’ as TLC granted charitable status

A North East social enterprise supporting disabled people has been granted charitable status.

Tailored Leisure Company (TLC), founded by social entrepreneur Tara Mackings BEM, has worked with over 6500 people since it launched in 2019, providing accessible fitness programmes and championing inclusive leisure.

Achieving charitable status will enable TLC to access additional funding and legal benefits to grow its initiatives, including its flagship project, the ‘Butterfly of the North,’ a short break and leisure service for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Tara, a finalist in the 2025 Enterprise Vision Awards, is also taking on the Great North Run as part of TLC’s ongoing fundraising efforts.

She said: “Achieving charitable status is a pivotal moment for us.

“This recognition really does strengthen our ability to pursue our mission and build further sustainable partnerships.

“Charitable status will allow TLC to secure greater support from individuals, corporates, and foundations, enabling us to broaden our initiatives and expand our programmes to reach more people in the community.

“This will drive and help create longer term financial security and really will make a tangible difference to the lives of our clients and we are very excited about the future and the additional opportunities this will provide.

“As we move into an exciting new chapter, we’d urge businesses to start conversations with the team as to how they can support our mission across the region.”
