RGS named independent school of the year
An independent school in Newcastle is celebrating national recognition during a milestone year.
Royal Grammar School (RGS) Newcastle has been named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025, with the accolade coming as the co-educational school marks its 500th anniversary.
Judges highlighted RGS Newcastle’s commitment to wellbeing, creativity and academic excellence, with its ethos built around belonging, mutual support and ambition.
Headteacher Geoffrey Stanford said: “Receiving the ‘Independent Senior School of the Year’ award at the Tes Awards was a proud moment – not just for what it says about RGS today, but for how it reflects the values that have shaped us for over 500 years: a sense of belonging, belief in one another, a love of learning, and the ambition to succeed.
“To receive this recognition in our quincentenary year makes it all the more special.”
Alongside the recognition for the senior school, RGS Junior School’s headteacher James Miller was also nominated for ‘Independent Headteacher of the Year’.
Mr Stanford added: “We are especially proud that Mr Miller was shortlisted alongside our alumnus James Dahl, master of Wellington College, and the very deserving winner on the evening, RGS governor Sue Woodroofe, principal of The Grammar School at Leeds – a powerful reflection of the reach and impact of the RGS community.”
The Tes Schools Awards, often dubbed the ‘Oscars of education’ and now in its 17th year, spotlight excellence across early years, primary, secondary and special education in both the state and independent sectors.
Rod Williams, chief executive of Tes, added: “A special congratulations to all the winners and finalists at this year’s Tes Schools Awards.
“The remarkable achievements of state and independent schools, teachers, and trusts celebrated this evening are a powerful demonstration of the excellence and dedication driving UK education.”
