‘Exemplar’ scheme takes shape in Gateshead
A new supported housing development is progressing swiftly in the North East, aimed at helping vulnerable adults live independently.
Tyne Housing’s Portland Street scheme, in Pelaw, Gateshead, is set to open in spring 2026 with 20 one-bedroom homes.
Designed to promote wellbeing and affordability, the scheme also includes green features such as solar panels, air source heat pumps and increased insulation to keep running costs low.
Officials say the project, delivered in partnership with Gateshead Council, will provide 17 supported properties and three ‘moving on’ flats for those transitioning towards work.
Steve McKinlay, chief executive of Tyne Housing, said: “Even though we’re in the early stages of construction, the progress being made on site is great to see with the foundations and initial structures now in place and the steel frameworks due to be erected shortly.
“Our Pelaw development is one of the few supported housing schemes currently in construction and purpose designed as an exemplar.
“It will provide a sense of stability, security and community for vulnerable residents, whilst addressing a national housing and homelessness issue at a locality level.
“Investments and developments like this are crucial, so we’re delighted to see it coming out of the ground.”
Regional contractor Brims Construction has completed foundations and ground-floor structures, with further work ongoing.
Funded through significant investment from Tyne Housing, as well as £3.5 million from Homes England and the Government’s Single Homeless Accommodation Programme, the development will create ten new jobs and provide 24/7 onsite support for residents aged 25 and over.
