
RFA Lyme Bay returns home to River Tyne
A North East marine engineering hub is set to carry out vital upgrades for a returning military vessel.
APCL A&P Tyne is hosting the RFA Lyme Bay for a contractor support period (CSP) – the ship’s first return to the River Tyne since it was built over 15 years ago.
The works include generator overhauls, galley refurbishment and HVAC system upgrades.
Ian Douglas, managing director of APCL A&P Tyne, said: “APCL A&P Tyne is delighted to welcome RFA Lyme Bay to its facility this week.
“This is the first time Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels have docked on the River Tyne in over 15 years.
“Our shipyards are busier than ever before, ensuring the Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the international seaborne community are ready and available.
“APCL's A&P's network of facilities provide greater dock availability and agility to all our customers, and we are delighted to be supporting RFA Lyme Bay's CSP at our APCL A&P Tyne facility.”
The work is part of an ongoing Ministry of Defence contract led by APCL A&P Falmouth, with teams from both sites and specialist subcontractors supporting the project to keep the Bay Class vessel ready for operations.
