Henley appointed to restore historic mill

A historic Leeds building is poised for a new lease of life through a landmark regeneration project.

Henley Restoration and Remedials has been appointed by City Life Developments as the principal contractor to restore Midland Mill, one of Leeds’ oldest surviving textile mills, as part of the South Bank’s Sky Gardens masterplan.

Built in 1793, the mill will undergo extensive structural work, including the careful dismantling and rebuilding of key sections, a full roof replacement and sustainability upgrades, featuring discreet solar PV tiles.

The project blends precision engineering and heritage conservation, with Henley drawing on its in-house divisions to integrate modern techniques with original materials to ensure the mill becomes a defining feature of Leeds’ skyline once more.

Tom Cardoe, managing director – restoration, at Henley Construction Management Group, said: “This is a flagship heritage project and a major undertaking.

“Our role isn’t just to preserve the past; it is to engineer it for the future.

“That is where Henley sets itself apart: we plan, we build, we restore, all in-house.”

Gareth Morgan, managing director of City Life Developments, added: “Appointing Henley Restoration and Remedials Ltd was an easy decision.

“Their attention to detail, in-house capability, and deep respect for heritage made them the natural choice.

“Midland Mills is at the heart of our Sky Gardens scheme, and we’re excited to see it restored as a symbol of Leeds’ evolving future.”
