Spencer Group celebrates award-winning culture
A Hull-based engineering contractor has been recognised for outstanding commitment to employee wellbeing and workplace culture.
Spencer Group, founded in 1989 and headquartered on Humber Quays, was named ‘Best Place to Work – Contractor’ at the New Civil Engineer Awards 2025, held at the Hilton Bankside, London.
The company’s “Hard Hats, Soft Hearts” approach, which received particular praise from the judges, reflects its focus on inclusivity and staff support through initiatives such as mental health first aiders, the Time to Talk Day pledge, flexible working and family-friendly policies.
This commitment was echoed in Spencer Group’s latest employee survey, with more than 90 per cent of staff expressing satisfaction with their workplace and clarity on career progression.
The judges noted they were “wowed by the results of the staff survey that showed how successful this company’s personalised development approach is”.
Spencer Group has demonstrated a firm commitment to personal development by promoting from within, championing women in engineering and using innovative tools such as PRINT® to tailor leadership and growth opportunities to individual strengths.
The firm also plays a key role in nurturing future talent as a founding partner of Hull’s Ron Dearing University Technical College, having recruited more than 60 apprentices to date, while over the past decade the firm has raised £61,000 for charity.
Yvonne Moir, HR director, said: “We’re delighted our commitment to being an outstanding employer has been recognised.
“We have a clear understanding that our people are the key to our success and we prioritise their wellbeing at every level.
“We pride ourselves on being a modern employer in a traditional sector, placing people at the heart of everything we do.”
