Delight as town revamp hits 'major milestone'
Developers behind a town centre regeneration project have hailed a “major milestone” in its progress.
Building work to create six apartments and four shops in Bedlington has finished.
Bosses say all residential space is let, with national baker Greggs taking the first retail base.
They add “demand is high for remaining units”, saying the venture – known as the Market Place project – “will act as a catalyst for further regeneration”.
The scheme also includes new cycling and pedestrian routes, and a link between the high street and a supermarket.
The project was led by property investment and development business Advance Northumberland alongside contractor Meldrum Group.
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, deputy leader and cabinet member for business, growth and regeneration at Northumberland County Council, said: “These improvements are a great milestone for this project.
“Bedlington has so much potential, and this project has created a more attractive and accessible town centre for everyone.
“It’s fantastic to see local businesses already getting involved, and we look forward to others setting up in the near future.”
Steven Harrison, chief executive at Advance Northumberland, added: “This is a significant step forward for Bedlington.
“The completion of this development not only improves the fabric of the town, but also provides real opportunities for local businesses and residents.”
