Premier League side scores university honour
A football club has scored an academic honour.
Sunderland AFC has received an honorary doctorate of sport from the University of Sunderland.
Officials say the accolade recognises the club’s “outstanding contribution to football and the city of Sunderland.”
David Bruce, chief business officer at Sunderland AFC, which will compete in the Premier League next season, accepted the award on behalf of the club.
He said: “This is an incredible honour.
“Our roots are deeply embedded in the city’s culture and history, and this award celebrates not only our footballing journey but also our longstanding connection with education and community.”
Sir David Bell, University of Sunderland vice-chancellor and chief executive, added: “Promotion to the Premier League could not have come at a better time, as it sits alongside the continuing transformation of Sunderland as a place to live, work and study.
“The relationship between the football club and the university is enduring, as we build new partnerships and relationships for the future.”
