Hodgson Sayers raises the roof on young talent
A County Durham-based construction company is supporting efforts to inspire young people across the North East through cultural and engineering education.
Stanley-headquartered Hodgson Sayers, which also has a base in Nottingham and specialises in roofing, building maintenance and security solutions, has teamed up with North East Museums to support programmes that encourage careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics).
The regional museums group engages more than 100,000 young people each year through exhibitions, heritage projects and hands-on learning activities.
With a reputation for craftsmanship and award-winning apprenticeships, Hodgson Sayers is backing initiatives for 14–21-year-olds including volunteering at Stephenson Steam Railway, curating exhibitions at the Laing Art Gallery and Hatton Gallery, as well as work experience placements targeted at disadvantaged backgrounds.
The partnership also supports student placements with local universities and careers fairs that introduce young people to different industries.
John Sayers, managing director of Hodgson Sayers, said: “As a company, we absolutely recognise the importance of developing young people and allowing them to flourish and achieve great things.
“Apprentices are the lifeblood of our business and ensuring we give them the very best platform to grow is the right thing to do.
“In the same way, Hodgson Sayers has its roots deep in the North East and for that reason we are very pleased to work alongside North East Museums to provide many other young people from the region with the chance to gain work experience at fabulous locations such as Stephenson Steam Railway, which I had the pleasure of visiting recently.”
Keith Merrin, director of North East Museums, added: “We’re very grateful to Hodgson Sayers for their support and enthusiasm for our work with children and young people.
“Their sponsorship supports our commitment to social mobility - helping young people in our region gain the confidence, skills and experience to be the best that they can be.”
