Hornsea 3 anchors at Teesworks in ‘landmark’ deal
An offshore wind project has secured space at a North East port.
Hornsea 3, developed by renewable energy company Ørsted, has signed a lease agreement for up to 300,000sq metres at Teesworks’ Steel River Quay.
The site, located on the south bank of the River Tees, will be used to store and stage critical components for the wind farm’s construction.
These include monopile foundations weighing more than 2300 tonnes each, along with secondary steel structures, ahead of being loaded onto offshore installation vessels.
Hornsea 3’s contractors include Severfield, SeAH, Mammoet and Cadeler, all working from or near the quay.
Bosses say the move marks Steel River Quay’s first large-scale offshore wind user.
Jason Ledden, senior project director at Hornsea 3, said: “Ørsted’s choice of Steel River Quay at Teesworks demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in British infrastructure, growth and jobs.
“The port is the first in the UK to be specifically designed for the offshore wind industry and we’re proud to be its first large-scale users.
“Offshore wind is not only generating clean, plentiful energy, it’s bringing economic benefits to communities all around the UK.”
Ally Cameron, managing director at Steel River Quay, added: “This is a landmark moment.
“To welcome Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 project as our first large-scale offshore wind base is a huge vote of confidence in the infrastructure, location and capability we’ve built.
“This partnership will not only deliver clean energy infrastructure for the UK but also drive jobs, investment and opportunity for our region.”
Teesworks, the former Redcar steelworks site that is being led by the South Tees Development Corporation and private partners, is being transformed into a hub for clean energy, aiming to attract billions in investment and create thousands of jobs.
John Barnes, chief executive of the South Tees Development Corporation, added: “This agreement is a clear example of how sustained public and private collaboration is unlocking new industries on Teesside.
“From day one, our ambition for Teesworks has been to deliver nationally significant projects that secure skilled jobs, attract global investment and place our region at the forefront of the UK’s green industrial future.
“Ørsted’s commitment to Steel River Quay brings that ambition to life and marks a decisive step in transforming Teesworks into a thriving hub for offshore wind.”
