Step into the shadows of 28 Years Later
A post-apocalyptic thriller might not sound like your typical travel inspiration, but fans of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the UK box office smash, are being invited to #VisitIfYouDare and experience the North East locations that brought the film to life.
From the haunting ruins of Hadrian’s Wall to the hidden corners of Newcastle’s medieval past, a collection of new experiences across Northumberland, Newcastle and Durham are giving visitors the chance to follow in the film’s footsteps – with a twist.
At Blackfriars, said to be the oldest dining hall in England, guests can enjoy a zombie-themed cocktail, three-course dinner and an eerie after-hours tour of the 13th-century Dominican Friary, a jewel of Newcastle’s medieval past.
Blackfriars’ sister restaurant Dobson and Parnell is offering a ‘Sip and Survive’ cocktail experience, with a ghoulish menu of drinks, including The Infected, Patient Zero and The Quarantine Zone, with a cheese and charcuterie sharing board.
Those brave enough can sign up for the Apocalypse Survival Tour – an immersive four-hour challenge along Hadrian’s Wall where cinematic storytelling meets Roman history.
Alternatively, you can go off-grid in a Land Rover Defender for a self-guided survival road trip through the film’s wildest locations, with mapped routes and the chance to camp under the stars.
Elsewhere, Escape Key Newcastle is offering £28 off its plague-themed escape room, while fans of Vera can tour iconic filming spots across Newcastle and the Northumberland coast, including Vera’s home on Lindisfarne.
For something lighter, catch an open-air film in Newcastle Castle’s medieval Great Hall – just don’t look behind you…
