‘Bring opportunity home’ to North East

A regional charity is stepping up efforts to boost local giving and support communities.

Community Foundation North East recently brought together philanthropists, businesses and political leaders at the Houses of Parliament to promote its mission of expanding philanthropy across the North East.

Hosted by Catherine McKinnell MP and supported by Newcastle Building Society, the event highlighted the region’s strong tradition of homegrown generosity.

Catherine, who represents Newcastle North, said: “It was a real pleasure to host and celebrate the Community Foundation North East in Parliament.

“As their local MP, I am proud of the work that they do across our region – making the case for investing in our local communities.

“Our region is known for its warm heart and strong community spirit.

“The Community Foundation is a shining example of this, giving grants to community groups and making sure that philanthropy goes to the places which need it the most.”

A key focus was the North East Roots Fund, designed to connect the region’s expat community with causes back home, encouraging those with ties to the area to contribute time, money and expertise even if they no longer live there.

Early supporters shared their enthusiasm and invited others to join this growing network.

Speaking at the event, Rob Williamson, chief executive of Community Foundation North East, emphasised the region’s deep-rooted culture of generosity and the urgent need to build on it.

He said: “People from the North East have a deep sense of community and a strong tradition of stepping up.

“But today’s challenges demand more from philanthropy,

“By encouraging the giving of money, time, and expertise, we can bring not just investment, but real power, back to the region.

“The North East has the ambition, the leadership and the spirit.

“With the right support and partnerships, philanthropy can help build a fairer, more prosperous future for all.”

Looking ahead, the Foundation plans to host the first North East Roots Homecoming in December 2025, a celebration of the region’s global community and philanthropic champions.

Alongside this, Community Foundation North East is working to influence national policy to ensure philanthropy plays a key role in addressing regional challenges.
