Kromek detects success with £1.7 million deal
A technology firm behind equipment helping diagnose illness and foil terror plots is set to expand its national security work after landing a Government contract
County Durham-based Kromek has secured a £1.7 million deal to supply wearable radiation detectors for use by frontline responders such as police, border forces and emergency services.
The contract is the first awarded under a new four-year programme to upgrade the UK’s radiological and nuclear threat detection capabilities, with Kromek, headquartered at NETPark, in Sedgefield, being one of a select group of UK suppliers approved to deliver under the Government’s new security framework.
As part of the deal, bosses say Kromek will also deliver training and product maintenance.
They add that a significant share of the contract value will be delivered this financial year, supporting growth in the firm’s chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) detection division.
Dr Arnab Basu, chief executive of Kromek, which recently posted its first annual profit, said: “We’re proud to win our first contract under the UK Government framework for radiological and nuclear detection equipment.
“As one of the few pre-approved suppliers, we are uniquely positioned to support the Home Office’s mission to strengthen national security and to secure further strategic orders.
“This contract affirms our leadership in the sector and highlights the significant growth potential unlocked by our selection for this critical framework.”
Kromek’s D3S-ID devices are compact, discreet and able to identify radiation sources within seconds, offering real-time threat analysis during emergencies.
The technology has already been used globally in high-profile locations including New York, Ukraine and key European transport hubs.
